Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the primary modality of traditional Chinese medicine. It treats a wide range of health conditions and is practiced by inserting very thin, pre-packaged and sterilized disposable needles into specific points on the body. For children, a needle-less approach called Shonishin uses tapping and brushing techniques on acupuncture points. It is safe, effective, and a drug-free option for many non-emergency conditions.

These practices are designed to stimulate your body’s own healing mechanisms—stimulating blood flow, tissue repair, and helping to release natural pain killers.

Some of the most common reasons people seek acupuncture include:

  • Acute and chronic pain, like sports injuries, joint and back pain relief, arthritis, and headaches

  • Respiratory issues, like asthma, allergies, and colds

  • Digestive issues, like heartburn, diarrhea, and nausea

  • Reproductive issues, like infertility, menopausal symptoms, and menstrual cramps

  • Immune function, like recurring infections and the side effects of some cancer treatments

  • Fatigue, depression, anxiety, and insomnia

  • Pediatric issues like colic, food allergies, bedwetting, hyperactivity, and recurrent infections

Little Dragons (ON hold for now due to covid)

Drop in for a monthly shonishin wellness treatment for your little kids. Here is why you should bring your kids. As much as you ask your kids to cover their mouth when they cough or blow their nose into a tissues, kids bring germs home for the whole family, that can’t be controlled. Monthly acupressure and shonishin treatments strengthen your kid’s immune system. For you that means colds and flus are not as frequent, don’t last as long and don’t knock your kid down as hard. What’s not to like? Needles? Nope, shonishin (show-knee-shin) is a non-needle technique that involves gently brushing and tapping the skin of arms, legs, back and belly. Most little ones relax into the treatment or play with toys while its happening - no need to stay still! Make a morning of being downtown and head to Madison Children’s Museum or the Farmer’s Market after your treatment. These treatments are intended to be preventative, so you child doesn’t need to be struggling with anything in order to benefit. If your child has a tendency to get colds easily, often has ear infections or coughs, trouble pooping, tummy-aches, easily emotional or angry, rashes, then I would highly recommend treatment at least monthly.

Pediatric One on one Treatments

Acupuncture is a safe, natural and effective way to address your child’s health concerns. It stimulates several processes that activate the body’s own innate healing potential. Acupuncture is compatible with other systems of health care and kids love it! Once they know the routine, the children start to climb on the treatment table as soon as they walk into the treatment room.

We use the term “taps” for children instead of needle. This more accurately describes the process of needles being painlessly tapped in and immediately removed. For older kids and teens, the taps may be left in for a few minutes. Usually nothing is felt at all.  If there is any discomfort, it is often described as a mosquito bite.

For those not ready for taps, there are several other equally effective non-needle techniques. In addition to taps, other tools include Shonishin – a Japanese modality of brushing and tapping the acupoints, Tuina acupressure massage, herbal tinctures and dietary modifications.

No matter the technique, pediatric acupuncture treatments are brief and gentle, lasting for only a few minutes.  Kids don’t need to sit or lay still, they can play with toys during the session.
